You probably struggle with them too. With small, short frizzy hairs. According to hairdresser surveys those ‘flyaways’ are the biggest frustration of consumers. That’s why Dyson is now launching the ‘flyaway’ attachment for its Dyson Supersonic hair dryer that allows you to achieve a salon-worthy smooth finish at home in no time. You don’t even need hot air to do it. We tried it out.
“I think we can all agree that frizzy hair is a major frustration for many,” says Jen Atkin, Dyson Global Styling Ambassador. “Nothing feels as good as that brushing from the hair salon. Taming annoying frizzy hair requires a trick that is a core skill for the stylist. We wanted you to be able to get that same, shiny finish at home. Dyson’s latest flyaway attachment allows you to achieve a super-smooth finish just like at the hair salon.”
Dyson’s new flyaway attachment helps you smooth out frizzy hair in a jiffy and without extreme heat!
Years of development
The Dyson engineers didn’t take any chances. They observed more than 420 stylists in eighty salons around the world and gathered more than 1.14 billion individual, professional-styling data from more than 10,000 hours of trials with professional stylists. While stylists use a round brush and hair dryer to smooth out “stray hairs,” self-stylists who wanted to mimic the same salon finish use extreme heat or straighteners. The latter step exposes the hair to unnecessary, extra heat, increasing the risk of damage. Damaged hair is weaker and more prone to breakage, perpetuating frizzy hair.
“After seeing stylists use a ‘brush and hairdryer’ technique to smooth frizzy hair, our engineers got in action,” says Emma Sheldon, Dyson Hair Care Category Director. “Traditionally, the hairdresser uses a round brush to part and contain the hair, while the airflow from the dryer is used to push the short, loose hairs out of sight. We set out to find a way to mechanize this method for the everyday styler.” The new Dyson flyaway attachment uses the Coanda phenomenon – air that follows the surface – to blow the short frizzy hairs under the long hairs, visibly smoothing the hair without exposing the hair to extreme heat. We experienced that with the Dyson Supersonic hairdryer and the flyaway attachment we brushed our hair superfast smooth. Moreover our hair felt much less dry over time.
Dyson flyaway: your brushing @home will never be the same again

Dyson engineers tested different angles before arriving at the optimal semi-circular curve that gives the flyaway attachment its distinct shape. Early prototypes had a closed circular loop, but through further testing, engineers determined that the bottom of the circle was unnecessary. The excess material was removed without affecting performance.
Fastest hairdryer
The Dyson Supersonic hairdryer is the fastest hairdryer, designed for different hair types. Powered by a small but powerful Dyson digital V9 motor, it spins at up to 110,000 rpm. That’s up to six times faster than other hair dryers. The size of the Dyson digital V9 motor allowed engineers to move the motor to the handle for optimal hand balance. Intelligent heat control measures air temperature 40 times per second and regulates heat. This prevents extreme heat damage and helps protect hair’s shine. Air Multiplier technology boosts air up to three times to produce a controlled high-pressure, high-speed airflow for fast drying and precision styling.
For different hair types
Dyson has already developed several attachments for the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer to style multiple types of hair. These include the redesigned diffuser and styling concentrator; the wide-tooth comb attachment for afro and textured hair and the soft airflow attachment. The new Flyaway attachment is fully compatible with existing models of the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer. The Supersonic hair dryer including flyaway attachment costs 399 euros. The attachment is also available online separately for 30 euros.
