Valérie Bostoen-Bourdeau from Artor Winery nominated for Wine Lady of the Year 2025

In 2021, Ghent entrepreneurs Alain and Valérie Bostoen-Bourdeau launched Artor Winery, a passion project blending Hungary’s rich winemaking heritage with innovative craftsmanship. Their commitment has produced two exceptional wines, showcasing Hungary’s terroir and traditions. The co-founder Valérie Bostoen-Bourdeau was recently nominated for Wine Lady of the Year 2025. Moreover, the wine itself won a gold medal at the Hungarian National Wine Competition in 2019, 2020, and again in 2021.

A Family-Driven Vision

Artor Winery is deeply personal. The name pays tribute to Alain and Valérie’s sons, Arthur and Hector, while the labels feature original doodles by Alain. Designed by Valérie, the packaging reflects the family’s aesthetic sensibilities and future plans for matching wine accessories. “This project is very close to our hearts,” says Valérie. “It combines many of our passions, and we make decisions as a family of four. We want people to feel that connection in every bottle.”

Artor Winery produces two elegant Bordeaux blends from Hungary’s Villány region, often called the “Bordeaux of Hungary” for its exceptional wines.

The Wines

Artor Winery produces two elegant Bordeaux blends from Hungary’s Villány region, often called the “Bordeaux of Hungary” for its exceptional wines. The winery spans 4.5 hectares across three vineyards, producing approximately 13,000 bottles annually. Each vintage matures for 16 months in Hungarian oak barrels, enhancing the wines’ complexity and character.

  • Artor: A refined blend of 60% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, offering richness and balance.
  • Alter by Artor: A harmonious combination of Cabernet Franc and Syrah, noted for its freshness and elegance.

The winery’s debut vintage, Artor 2019, was launched in 2022, setting a high standard for Hungarian wines. The 2020 vintage features bold blackcurrant notes, subtle roasted coffee, and cedarwood aromas, with structured tannins for a complex finish.

Tasting Notes

  • Artor: A rich red wine with dark fruit, vanilla, chocolate, and smoky wood aromas.
  • Alter by Artor: Elegant and fresh, featuring cassis, violets, rosehip, and a hint of pepper.

A Winemaking Legacy

Partnering with winemaker Peter Somodí and led by master winemaker István Ipacs Szabó, who boasts over 20 years of experience, Artor Winery continues to push the boundaries of Hungarian wine. “Artor is a Bordeaux-style wine but with an emphasis on its fruit and elegant structure,” says Matthieu Vanneste, sommelier at Wijnen De Clerck.
