MSC Cruises: Record Amount of Belgian Bookings in 2024

Cruising is rapidly gaining popularity among travelers, thanks to attractive pricing and unbeatable holiday experiences. With more families and younger guests coming aboard, and a rising standard of luxury, the cruise industry is adapting to offer even greater comfort and style.

“2024 was our best year ever,” says Frank Van den Steen, Country Manager Benelux MSC Cruises. “Tens of thousands of Belgians traveled with MSC Cruises in 2024, a 13% increase compared to our previous record year, 2023.”

Global Cruise Industry on the Rise

The newly released CLIA 2024 data confirms the trend: the global cruise industry is booming. After a temporary setback during the pandemic, recent figures show a clear recovery and growth. In 2023, 31.7 million passengers cruised worldwide, up from 29.7 million in 2019. This upward trend continues with 34.6 million travelers in 2024, and numbers are expected to reach 42 million by 2028.

Europe is also sharing in this success, with 8.4 million passengers in 2024, up from 8.2 million in 2023. The Belgian market is seeing remarkable growth: from 66,000 passengers in 2019 to 83,000 in 2023 and 93,000 in 2024.

This growth is mirrored at MSC Cruises, further strengthening its leading position in Belgium: more than half of all Belgians who cruise do so with MSC Cruises.

Cruises: The Ultimate Value for Money

According to Van den Steen, more travelers are discovering the unique appeal of cruise holidays. “A cruise combines the discovery of new destinations with a high-quality onboard experience in one package. Gastronomy, comfort, wellness, entertainment for all ages, and top-level shows all play a key role. This all-inclusive approach offers exceptional value for money, which is our main strength.”

Younger Guests and Growing Demand for Comfort

“In 2024, we saw a 14% increase in young families and a general decrease in the average age of our guests, which now stands at 46,” notes Van den Steen. “This makes sense, given our family-friendly onboard offering. Our newest ships are especially popular with families due to their expanded range of facilities for children and teens.”

Another notable trend is the shift from inside and oceanview cabins to balcony cabins. 71% of MSC Cruises guests now choose the comfort of a private balcony, reflecting the growing demand for premium travel experiences.

Belgian travelers are, more than other nationalities, willing to pay more for a holiday that goes beyond standard comfort. This also explains the success of the MSC Yacht Club, an exclusive “ship-within-a-ship” concept offering a private oasis with its own restaurant, sun deck, pool, and 24/7 butler service, while still enjoying access to all the amenities of a large ship.

Mediterranean and Caribbean Remain Top Priorities

The Mediterranean (west and east) remains the top destination for 53% of MSC Cruises guests. Northern Europe is chosen by 24%, especially for the Norwegian fjords. In winter, the Emirates, Canary Islands, and the Caribbean are popular, with the Caribbean showing the strongest growth: a 45% increase, a trend expected to continue in 2025.

This growth is reflected in investments: MSC Cruises is expanding its Caribbean presence with its new flagship, MSC World America, and the recently opened MSC Cruise Terminal in Miami-the world’s largest, with a capacity of 36,000 passengers per day.

Booking Habits: Expert Advice Still Matters

Despite the digital age, professional travel advice remains important. “Most of our clients book through trusted travel agents and specialist agencies,” says Van den Steen. “The majority book 6 to 12 months in advance, but we’re also seeing an increase in last-minute bookings, especially among those seeking certainty in uncertain times.”

Looking Ahead to 2025: Full Steam Ahead

“For 2025, we see the upward trend continuing,” emphasizes Frank Van den Steen. “The numbers speak for themselves, and we expect another record year with further growth of 5 to 10%, strengthening our position as the absolute market leader in Belgium.”
