Maison Wittamer Celebrates 40 Years of Its Iconic Samba

An enduring emblem of Belgian pâtisserie, the Samba returns to the spotlight as Maison Wittamer marks four decades of its most celebrated creation.

To coincide with the birthday of Paul Wittamer on June 18, the renowned Brussels maison unveils an exclusive anniversary trilogy, reinterpreting the signature flavors that first defined the Samba in 1986. Originally awarded first prize at the prestigious Relais Desserts international competition, the cake quickly became a cornerstone of the house and a symbol of its craftsmanship, later earning Wittamer recognition as an official purveyor to the Belgian Royal Court. Forty years on, the Samba remains a testament to precision, refinement, and creative mastery. For this commemorative edition, Wittamer expands its universe across three distinct savoir-faire: pâtisserie, chocolate, and viennoiserie. At the heart of each creation lies the original trio of Valrhona chocolates, Jivara, Guanaja, and Caraïbe, preserving the essence of the classic while inviting contemporary expression.

The iconic Samba cake itself is reimagined with a modern finish, remaining faithful to its original profile while embracing a more refined aesthetic. It will be available both as an individual pastry (€3.50) and as a cake for four (€26), replacing the current version in Wittamer’s display.

Complementing the pâtisserie is a newly introduced praline, discreetly embossed with the initials “PW” in tribute to Paul Wittamer. Named Carré Paul, this elegant confection translates the Samba’s flavor profile into chocolate form and is presented in a box of twelve (€16), with the potential to join the permanent collection.

The maison also revisits its viennoiserie offering with the Suisse Samba, a contemporary, indulgent reinterpretation of the classic chocolate pastry inspired by the cake’s signature notes. This new creation will replace the existing Suisse Chocolat in-store.

With this anniversary trilogy, Maison Wittamer not only honors the legacy of Paul Wittamer but also reflects on its own evolution, where heritage, craftsmanship, and innovation converge. Forty years after its debut, the Samba remains firmly embedded in Brussels’ culinary heritage.
