A contemporary gem. A 1960s design chair. Or a side table inlaid with amethyst fragments. There are plenty of eye-catchers at La Butte aux Bois in Lanaken. Today, the five-star hotel celebrates its 100th anniversary and has undergone a remarkable transformation. As part of this renovation, sustainable mineral plasters and natural lime mortars played a key role.
La Butte aux Bois, now under the ownership of Belgian entrepreneur and jewelry designer Jochen Leën since 2021, is a renowned five-star hotel in Flanders, boasting 60 rooms. The Moonlight suite is adorned with a natural lime mortar from BEAL International, a Belgian family business with an international reputation for mineral coatings and natural limes. Stefan Vandeweyer of SV Interieur explains: “The major advantage of this natural lime mortar is its very soft appearance. Originally, this mortar was designed for outdoor use to plaster or limewash walls, an ancient technique where the mortar is applied with a block brush to preserve the structure of the masonry while protecting the surface from weather conditions.
La Butte Aux Bois Uses Natural Lime As A Modern Material

I am passionate about nature and the beauty of minerals and gemstones. With Mortex®, we have chosen a natural and sustainable material that perfectly aligns with our philosophy.

Revamped Sinks and Showers
The sinks and shower areas in the Tower Room have also been revamped, using Mortex® in a light sand color. This waterproof mineral plaster from BEAL International, made with natural lime, is a versatile product that allows for the creation of seamless surfaces. Its texture resembles stone but offers a natural, warm finish and a soft feel. Stefan Vandeweyer explains: “Virtually any look is possible, from a refined natural stone appearance to a weathered wall with a coarse texture. This versatility makes the coating a favorite among architects.

Side Tables with Amethysts
Another signature product from BEAL International, BEALSTONE® mineral terrazzo, was used in a unique way at La Butte aux Bois. In Jochen Leën’s jewelry boutique, a few original side tables and a coffee table feature this mineral coating. Vandeweyer explains: “BEALSTONE® offers endless creative possibilities, as you can add various aggregates to the micromortar, such as pieces of glass, wood, or marble. I took a bold step and asked the owner if I could incorporate some of his special stones into the product. It was fantastic that he embraced the idea!
“With the transformation, the atmosphere at La Butte aux Bois is even more feel-good than before. The rooms in the old section were indeed due for renovation, and a lot of care has now been taken. ‘It’s my first time here,’ Beatrice tells us, ‘for a mother-daughter wellness four-day trip, and it’s just amazing. The atmosphere, the coziness, the cuisine, the tranquility, the service. It’s simply unique. I feel completely zen.'”
