Destination Defender

Land Rover’s Destination Defender is still a young initiative, originally launched in North America to give enthusiasts not only the chance to get behind the wheel of a Defender, but also to immerse them in heritage, nature, adventure, design, and lifestyle. Recently, Land Rover began experimenting with the concept in Europe as well—more specifically, on Ibiza. We flew over to have a look.

Europe is often regarded as the cradle of heritage brands and luxury products—from fashion houses and watchmakers to vineyards and artisanal ateliers. Consumers here tend to place a higher value on authenticity, tradition, and craftsmanship. No wonder the first European Destination Defender edition, held last autumn in Ibiza, was an immediate success. Until then, the focus of the program had been largely on North America. For the very first official edition, we must look to the Hudson Valley region near New York. That inaugural event—set in a festival-like atmosphere—took place three years ago at Oz Farm in Saugerties. Since then, Land Rover has continued to expand the program with multiple U.S. destinations and, since last year, with a European edition on Ibiza.

Physical and Technical Challenges
Never driven a Defender? Not an owner? No problem at all. The event is designed as a full brand immersion for outdoor enthusiasts and adventurers, blending off-road experiences with lifestyle elements, live music, gastronomy, workshops, nature encounters, community moments, and—if desired—glamping or camping.
This year and last year, guests stayed at Casa Única, a former monastery transformed into a quintessential Ibiza boho-chic villa with seven rooms. It also served as the venue for the event, where guests enjoyed, among other things, a Wagyu beef demonstration on a Big Green Egg barbecue, cocktails crafted by Austrian mixologist and double Cocktail World Champion Mario Hofferer, and a stargazing workshop led by an astronomer. The highlight of the evening: a glimpse of Saturn through the telescope.

“The mix of relaxation and hands-on experience—the combination of natural beauty, rugged landscapes, vibrant nights and serene days—perfectly matches what Defender, as a brand, wants to embody: adventure and authentic experience,” one of the Defender instructors told us. That is why Ibiza was chosen again as the location this year, though the concept was completely different. Last year in Ibiza, the brand presented an Eivissa Edition in two versions—Noontide and Sunrise—inspired by the island’s shifting colors throughout the day. This limited-edition Defender could only be ordered on-site during the event. This year, there were no limited editions, but instead one major announcement: the legendary Camel Trophy—once known as the ultimate off-road adventure since its inception in 1980—will return after decades of absence. The new successor carries a new name, Defender Trophy, but the spirit of adventure remains unmistakably the same. For For this Defender Trophy, a special edition of the Defender has been released in Deep Sandglow Yellow and Keswick Green, equipped with exclusive features and event-specific upgrades.

Where the Camel Trophy of the 1980s and ’90s and later the G4 Challenge (2003–2008) became synonymous with grueling expeditions through the Amazon, Siberia, and Mongolia, the modern Defender Trophy continues the tradition with a contemporary twist: an emphasis on driving, technical, navigational, and physical challenges. Dozens of selected participants are pushed to explore their physical, emotional, and mental limits.

As attendees of Destination Defender, we received a first taste of this through an initiation into classic survival knots. Using thick climbing ropes around tree trunks, we learned the clove hitch, the timber hitch, and even the symbolic reef knot—often called the “love knot.” A playful nod, yet also a knot symbolizing cooperation and connection. That same sense of connection was felt as we tackled the underlying structure of several problem-solving challenges in teams, using wooden beams, ropes, and rings.

Then the real work began. Together, we built our own bridge—a primitive construction consisting of two massive logs serving as tracks. The exercise demanded strength, improvisation, trust in each other, and faith in the material.

Once the final ropes were securely tightened, the moment of truth arrived: the Defender was started, and, guided by the hand signals of a teammate, we carefully drove across the improvised wooden passage.
A little to the right. Stop. A little to the left. The creaking of the timber, the growl of the engine, and the cheers from our team made it clear that the legacy of the Camel Trophy is still very much alive—only now in a more modern form.
