When it comes to laser hair removal, everything revolves around consistency, patience, and above all, clear communication – both from the client and the specialist. Kirsten Hulsmans, owner of Laser4You, a center for permanent laser hair removal in Zonhoven, explains.

“For clients, it can be tempting to expect a definitive result after just one or two sessions, but that’s not how it works,” says Kirsten. “After one session with the Lightsheer diode laser, you can already expect visible results — but not yet a permanent one. Laser hair removal works in line with the hair growth cycle. The laser light only targets hairs in the anagen phase — the growth phase. Since not all hairs are in this phase at the same time, an average of five to eight sessions is needed for an optimal result. Consistence is very important: each session brings the client a step closer to smooth, hair-free skin.”

Transparency Builds Trust
“A well-informed client feels more confident about the process and is more likely to complete the full series of treatments,” Kirsten continues. “That’s why it’s crucial to be open about the treatment protocol, possible side effects, and hormone-sensitive areas. I explain how each session is performed, which technologies are used, and what results the client can expect. I discuss potential side effects like temporary redness, mild swelling, or sensitivity after treatment. And I offer aftercare tips, such as avoiding sun exposure, saunas, and swimming pools, and using soothing creams. Some areas — such as the chin, upper lip, and bikini line — may require additional sessions due to hormonal influences. Sometimes, these areas also need yearly maintenance because new hairs can continue to appear.”

Managing Expectations
“Every client is different, and not everyone will achieve the same results within the same time frame,” Kirsten explains. “Therefore, I would like to clarify that factors like skin type, hair color, and hormones can influence the final outcome. Laser hair removal is not an instant solution but a process, where each session contributes to a long-lasting result. In cases of thin, fluffy, white, gray, or red hairs I refer them to other methods such as electrolysis. For clients who want treatments in the middle of summer, I advise against it due to the increased risk of pigmentation spots. In short, by communicating honestly and transparently, you not only build trust but also create a long-term relationship with your clients.”

Type of Device
“As a client look at the type of device being used during the treatment: what kind of laser it is, its proven results, the device’s safety, and whether it’s medically certified. And last but not least: Is the operator experienced? Only then can a safe and effective treatment be guaranteed.”
